I was in a meeting today with a group of community organisations and a funder. We were talking about the contraction of government funding and the impact that it was likely to have on the service delivery agencies. These are difficult times as we consider whether we can afford to keep staff, and no-one wants to be downsizing what are really vital services.
But we had to remind ourselves that this is not about us, it’s about them. That is, the impact on staff and service providers is a really poor proxy for the impact that the people who need the service are going to experience. We needed to remind ourselves that our focus has to be on delivering the best outcomes for clients with whatever the resources available are.
Even in times of funding difficulty service providers must focus on what is the best outcome for the people we are working for. That is what will motivate us to be innovative, to collaborate better, and to work for the common good.
